NEW YORK (Kyodo) — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Japan, India and Australia between Thursday and March 7, his office said Monday.

During his visit to Tokyo, Carney will hold talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to strengthen mutual investment and partnerships in clean energy, critical minerals and food security, the office said.

Amid heightened trade tensions with Washington under President Donald Trump, Ottawa is exploring a more diversified set of trading partners. Carney’s office described the countries he will visit as “three of Canada’s strongest Indo-Pacific partners.”

“In a more uncertain world, Canada is focused on what we can control,” Carney said in a statement. “We are forging new partnerships abroad to create greater certainty, security and prosperity at home.”

Carney’s first visit to Japan as prime minister will take place over two days through March 7, Japan’s top government spokesperson Minoru Kihara said in Tokyo on Tuesday.

“Through Prime Minister Carney’s visit, we hope that our two countries’ friendly and cooperative relations will deepen further,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara said.

Kihara said Carney and Takaichi are expected to have “frank” discussions on a wide range of topics, including strengthening ties as well as on regional and international developments.

The Canadian premier will first visit India and then Australia before going to Japan, according to his office.
