Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Japan next week for talks with Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae. It will be his first visit to Japan since he took office.

The Canadian prime minister’s office announced on Monday that Carney will travel to India, Australia and Japan, from February 26 to March 7.

The office said Carney will meet with Takaichi in Tokyo to strengthen mutual investment and partnerships in clean energy and critical minerals, among other matters. It added that the leaders will also discuss strengthening joint efforts on security and defense, including support for a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Since he took office in March 2025, Carney has been facing calls from the administration of US President Donald Trump to shoulder a greater burden in economy and security.

Last month, Carney became the first Canadian prime minister in 8 years to visit China and met with President Xi Jinping. The countries agreed to cooperate in economic and energy fields.

His speech last month at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos — where he called for unity among middle powers — attracted a lot of attention.

Carney’s office said, “In a more divided and uncertain world, Canada’s new government is focused on what we can control.”

Officials said the country will make use of its abundant energy and critical minerals and seek to enhance ties with other countries in trade and security.
