A fish festival is underway at Yoyogi Park in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. It features seafood from Fukushima, a prefecture hit hard by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
The Sakana and Japan Festival has been held since 2020. This year, 10 stalls at the site are selling Fukushima seafood to mark the 15th year since the disaster, which also caused a nuclear accident there.
A variety of fish bowls, made with deep sea fish sashimi, grilled rosy seabass and marinated flounder are on sale. Other dishes use sea urchins, surf clams and saury.
A visitor in his 50s from Yokohama City said sashimi contained lots of fat and was delicious.
Koshio Fumihito, the chief organizer said 15 years on, the business of the coastal fishing off Fukushima has still not recovered to pre-disaster levels. He said he hopes many more people will support Fukushima by enjoying the delicious fish, which is abundant in the area.
The festival will continue through 6 p.m. on Monday.
