Akihabara is an area of Tokyo known for anime, manga, electronics, games and arcades. But is it s good place to stay? In this video we take a walk around so you can see what it’s like, both on the main street and the backstreets. I’ll point out some interesting shops and restaurants, and useful things like convenience stores. I’ll show you what it’s like there at night, and discuss how safe it is and how foreigner-friendly, and whether it’s a good place for families. I’ll also show you how well-connected it is on the train, which areas you can walk to, and how to get to popular tourist destinations including Haneda Airport and Tokyo Disney.

  1. When we go to Tokyo, my 10 years old Grand daughter loves exploring Akihabara. While searching for figures, she guided me down one of those narrow staircases and we were confronted with lots of pictures of women who had forgotten to put their vests on.

  2. I'm not into anime but still find the Akihabara area a great location. I stay closer to Kanda Station for the access to the Chuo Rapid line but am only a 9 minute walk to Akihabra Station.

  3. we recently stayed in kanda which was about a 15 minute walk to akiba! was so quiet in that area and was crazy that just a short walk away was busy akihabara! Also made the mistake of going to the arcades on the same evening that we landed, so overwhelming when you’re jet lagged!😂

  4. If I would stay in the middle of Akihabara, I would be out of money within 2-3 days.

  5. Stayed JR Mets as well, it was great access to the train and fun stuff to do.
I remember first night being overwhelm by it all after spending a week in Kanazawa and Matsumoto 😂

  6. During my trip last December I stayed in that Apa hotel. Pretty high indeed, also pretty windy, as the walkways to the rooms are pretty much in the open air, I guess walls are too expensive!
I always find myself drifting towards Akiba during my tokyo trips. So I figured I might as well stay there.

Even though I was just there 2 months ago I feel weirdly "homesick" watching this video😅

  7. Must be absolute torture having to release these videos being in the UK and looking back on your old footage. I couldn't do it!

  8. Whenever I am in Tokyo I will usually stay in place somewhat near Akiba. But usually like a 25 minute walk away (e.g near Asakusabashi station) cuz I prefer staying at places like proper apartments that have a full kitchen and stuff rather then a hotel room, and those are way easier and cheaper to find a bit outside of popular tourist locations.
Some of my favourite anime stores (such as CharaGMart) are located there so I love spending lots of time in Akiba!

My Japan trips are usually split into 2 parts: The first half is always entered around the traditional and calm side of Japan (for example this year I will be exploring Okayama prefecture for the first time!). And the second half of my vacations are always centered around Tokyo, Anime events and shopping lol

  9. Thanks for sharing your opinion/views of Akihabara, this is really useful 🙂. Definitely a place to visit/stay if you are a Geek/Otaku, it has everything from manga/anime, to video games (retro or modern) and other hobby stuff like gunpla. It might a bit more expensive to buy thing there, but if you don't have too much time to go around Tokyo or outside the city this is the place where you could easily find what you're looking for. Taking a look at Book Off/Hard Off would be a good ideas for finding second hand stuff.

  10. I'll be staying in Akiba for the last two days of my Japan trip in May, staying at the Remm hotel next to the station. I requested a room facing the railway & they said they'd try but couldn't promise. Because I'm flying in & out of Haneda, I'll take the JR & monorail. When I arrive, I'm staying in Shimbashi, which will be a direct ride on the Keikyu/Asakusa line. Now for the bad news. I got your guidebook last week and looked up Little TGV on Google Maps. It was permanently closed.

  11. My favorite part of yodobashi Akiba is the floor of restaurants. So many fantastic restaurants up there.

Akiba is my choice of where to stay in Tokyo.

  12. The Beep staircase brings back memories. Got a few bargains in there, which I wasn’t expecting in Akihabara

  13. Oooo, no. I could not stay in the thick of Akihabara. It's too busy for me. I like knowing that I can dip in and out of the hustle and bustle, versus having it on my doorstep. I generally tend to avoid mosying about in Akihabara now, because as per the usual suspect hotspots in Tokyo — its just become too busy. I only go there for The French Toast Factory and that’s in. I’m in and out.

  14. I always stay in Akiba – either at the Remm or Washington which are both right on the station. It’s so convenient with the train and my hobbies are all there! I’m also addicted to crane games and gatcha so at the end of a day I love being able to go into the arcades late at night 🙂 it’s the best place to stay in Tokyo imo.

  15. I love the curry place with "Mild" or "Little Hot" as the spice levels. "Eh, it's a Little Hot." XD

  16. I’ve never really considered staying in Akihabara because I’m not into Anime! But this upcoming trip im going to a few different places eg Harajuku & Sensoji Temple. Then maybe the trip after this place 😅. I’ve developed this travel ‘persona’ where I employ the ‘no eye contact’ & leave sunglasses on at all times 😅 works a treat, most of the time 😁

  17. It's a good place to stay, and is also a strategic location, but it gets old easily if you go through Akihabara everyday. You would also realize that the majority of Akihabara is composed of corporate businesses and other types of offices, this also makes Akihabara station and other nearby train stations very busy at certain times of the day. I think only 1/3 of Akihabara is dedicated to anime, games, and other hobbies. If you've been to Akihabara before the pandemic, the anime stores and merch are better back then. Most of the anime stuff now are what I consider "tourist safe" , they focus on animes that they know are popular to tourist and the merch quality seems cheaper. The hotel we stayed at is 5 or 6 blocks away from the main Akihabara spot, so we really got to walk around and explore Akihabara. The maids standing along the street also now rarely cover their faces or turn around when they spot tourists holding cameras or phones, some do still try to hide their faces, but it's not like before where they quickly react to cameras..

  18. Last year we stayed in Kanda, which is just at walking distance from Akihabara, but more quiet. Really recommend it.

  19. There's an animated series "AKIBA-The Animation" including if you like burger 🍔: "Carl's Hamburger" is available in Akihabara.

  20. What a lovely hair color. In Akihabara, Japan, capsule toys are especially addictive.

  21. I love this channel!! First trip to Japan this October and these videos are SO helpful. I want to stay near Akihabara for the last leg, was just about to find something and this video pops up 🤩 Thank you! xx

  22. I'm a huge geek so I always stay in Akihabara when I go to Japan because it's always great to just be able to walk around there in the evening when you are back from exploring other places and have rested for a bit in the hotel :D. A great place to eat you haven't mentioned is the Kanda Tamagoken Akihabara if you like Omurice :D. It's quite hidden away in one of the side streets ^_^'

  23. This isn’t an area I’d considered staying in before but loved your video and next time I go I will look into this area as my 12 year old would love it!! Did you ever find it too much though and crave staying in a quieter area? ❤

  24. I usually stay where the hotels are cheapest
Last year I was in Ueno during 15 nights for $1155 that for me is very cheap but sure would be nice to try shibuya or something so you can walk around after 00:00 and not worry about trains

  25. I really wish YouTubers would stop mentioning APA. Don't give it air at all. Or if you do at least ask people to do some research on it. Dont support APA

  26. This would be a great destination to stay on your last days in Japan, as you can load up on a lot stuff before the return trip.
