Sanae Takaichi headed into a new parliamentary session after being reelected as prime minister Wednesday, with key points on the agenda.
Passing the fiscal 2026 budget, establishing an intelligence agency and accelerating discussions on eliminating the consumption tax on food are all top priorities for Takaichi.
By law, a new prime minister must be elected in the first parliamentary session after a Lower House election, even if the same lawmaker were to be named, along with a new Cabinet. Takaichi is set to retain all of her current Cabinet ministers.
