Heavy snowfall is forecast across parts of Japan this weekend, prompting warnings about avalanches, hazardous travel conditions and increased risks for skiers and snowboarders.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said additional snow is expected in northern Japan and along the Sea of Japan’s coast, where some areas have already recorded unusually deep accumulations.
Snowfall is expected to peak Sunday, with more than 20 inches possible in some locations, according to AccuWeather forecasts.
The U.S. Embassy Tokyo issued an advisory Friday cautioning that record snow levels, though attractive to winter sports enthusiasts, pose serious dangers.
“While these exceptional powder conditions create great opportunities for skiers and snowboarders, they also pose significant hazards for travelers and snow enthusiasts,” the embassy said in a notice on its website. “Exercise caution and prioritize safety during your visit.”
The advisory warned of avalanche risks, poor visibility, dangerous driving conditions and hidden hazards such as tree wells and snow-covered creeks.
In a separate alert issued Jan. 16, the embassy reminded U.S. citizens that backcountry skiing in Japan is often unpatrolled and can be particularly dangerous.
“Avalanches, severe weather, and limited rescue access can put lives at risk,” that alert said. “Stay within designated areas and plan ahead for a safe winter season.”
