Nihon Falcom unveiled Kyoto Xanadu, the newest entry in its long-running Xanadu series, during the February 5, 2026 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase. The game is scheduled to launch in Summer 2026 across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation, and PC via Steam.

Players will take on the role of Rei, a new student at Hirasaka Academy, a school for gifted students who aims to conquer the labyrinth of Xanadu. The game combines 2D side-scrolling exploration with 3D action combat, featuring Castlevania-style labyrinths in certain sections while offering traditional 3D environments for larger boss encounters.

The Xanadu series has a long history in gaming, dating back to 1985 when the original Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu was released for Japanese home computers. Developed by Nihon Falcom, the series has been known for blending action and role-playing elements throughout its various entries.

Tokyo Xanadu, one of the more recent releases in the series, was originally developed for PlayStation Vita. The game received an enhanced PlayStation 4 edition titled Tokyo Xanadu eX+. The expanded version included additional story content that explored other wielders beyond the main protagonist, new dungeons to explore, and the ability to play as the White Shroud character.
