KEARNEY, Neb — The annual Japanese Festival at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is set for Feb. 15, offering a taste of traditional Japanese summer festivities. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the event starting at 5:45 p.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room. Admission is free. This year’s theme, “Summer in Japan,” highlights the vibrant festival culture with live music, dance performances, interactive quizzes, and booths featuring traditional games. Attendees can sample popular festival foods like okonomiyaki, yakisoba, pickled cucumbers, and warabi mochi. “We chose Japanese summer as this year’s theme because it’s a busy time for festivals in Japan, and we wanted everyone in Kearney to experience that vibe,” said Ayato Shirasaka, a sophomore from Tokyo and president of the Japanese Association at Kearney. Celebrating its 25th year, the festival is organized by the Japanese Association at Kearney and is one of UNK’s most popular international events.
