Tragedy in Niseko: Second Australian man dies skiing in Japan following snowboarder lift accident
A tragic incident has recently happened to a Melbourne man who died at a ski resort in Japan just days after the death of Queensland snowboarder Brooke Day.
The 27-year-old collapsed and suffered a heart attack while skiing with six others in Niseko, Hokkaido. Four other skiers witnessed the fall and rushed to his aid.
Concerning the serious incident, authorities urgently arrived at the location, where a spokesperson confirmed that there was no accident, collision or fall of any kind.
The Australian man’s death came three days after 22-year-old Brooke Day died when her backpack became caught in a ski lift at the Tsugaike resort in Otari, near Nagano.
In this connection, a Dfat spokesperson said, “We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time.”
The resort’s lift operator stated that the company would fully cooperate with investigations and “take concrete measures to strengthen our safety management system.
Japan has faced record-breaking snowfalls resulting in more than 30 deaths and over 100 injuries suffered from serious injuries globally in snow-related incidents since 20 January.
While the recent death was a freak mechanical accident, the sudden collapse of a young man in Niseko underscores the unpredictable nature of health emergencies in extreme conditions. Additionally, heavy snowfall has forced train services to be suspended and halted operations at the main airport in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
