Police in Hong Kong have arrested six men and women in connection with the robbery of two Japanese men who were carrying a large sum of money.
The two Japanese had a backpack containing about 58 million yen, or around 376,000 dollars, in cash, snatched on a busy street in central Hong Kong on Friday.
The head of Hong Kong police announced on Saturday that six people, including three Japanese nationals, had been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the robbery.
The suspects include one of the two Japanese men who reported the backpack stolen to police.
Police suspect he may have provided information about the money to a group behind the robbery. The other three suspects are reportedly from mainland China and Hong Kong. Police also said they have retrieved part of the stolen money.
The robbery in Hong Kong came after an attempted robbery in a parking lot at Tokyo’s Haneda airport earlier in the day. In that incident, a Japanese man in his 50s was attacked with a pepper spray-like substance near his car, which had about 190 million yen, or 1.24 million dollars inside.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department believe he may have also been robbed in Hong Kong after leaving Japan.
Hong Kong police said that if necessary, they will conduct an investigation in cooperation with Japanese police.
