Excellent and fascinating video. Salaries not keeping pace with expenses is I think a phenomenon seen in many industrialized countries and a consequence of more than 50 years of globalization and neoliberal economics. Workers keep losing ground to automation and technology while most of the productivity gains go to the owners of capital. Yes a lot of people can walk around in Ginza but very few can shop there for much at all. However, some people really can shop there and buy insanely expensive goods without any concern for price, but they are not working class. I don't know how AI will change all this, but something will have to change because AI and robots will soon be able to do almost anything a human can do, and then what? Thanks for this amazing channel, always a wonderful experience watching these videos. 👍🏻
Changes in July: Japan is set to significantly increase its "International Tourist Tax" (departure tax) to JPY 3,000 (approx. USD 19) for all travelers aged two and over, effective July 2026, aimed at combating overtourism. This fee is added to flight/ferry tickets, while localized accommodation taxes (e.g., in Kyoto) are also rising to upwards of ¥10,000 per night per person for luxury stays.
