The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has announced record-breaking visitor arrivals from India in 2025, crossing the 300,000 mark for the first time in history. A total of 315,100 Indian travellers visited Japan between January and December 2025, representing a 35.2 per cent increase from 233,061 in 2024 and nearly 80 per cent higher than the pre-COVID benchmark of 2019 (175,896).The milestone highlights the growing enthusiasm of Indian travellers for Japan, supported by improved air connectivity, expanding destination awareness, and greater engagement between the Indian travel trade and Japanese tourism stakeholders.

May 2025 set an all-time monthly record with 43,040 Indian arrivals, surpassing even the cherry blossom season. March and April recorded 32,967 and 37,352 arrivals respectively-April showing 61 per cent year-on-year growth-driven by peak sakura travel. The strong May and June volumes indicate Japan’s emergence as a year-round destination for Indian tourists, supported by summer school holidays, lower domestic tourist pressure after Golden Week, and improved accommodation access.

The final quarter also recorded sharp gains as autumn and winter seasons attracted higher footfalls. November arrivals grew 22 per cent to around 28,900, while December climbed 37 per cent to 23,300, fuelled by interest in fall foliage, winter sports and illumination festivals across Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps.

According to JNTO’s Delhi Office, multiple factors contributed to the 2025 milestone: Japan’s positioning as a distinctive luxury and cultural destination, enhanced air connectivity, and a growing India-friendly ecosystem with multilingual signage, vegetarian and Indian cuisine options, and tax-free shopping facilities.

Improved connectivity has played a pivotal role. Japan Airlines’ new Narita route and All Nippon Airways’ planned Mumbai–Narita service (launching 2026) will expand direct links, while codeshare and transit options via Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong continue to boost accessibility.

JNTO’s India outreach-including the Japan Travel Fair 2026, consumer campaigns, FAM trips, advertising partnerships, and trade seminars-has further elevated awareness of destinations beyond the Golden Route, such as Hokkaido, Okinawa and the Alpine Route.

JNTO Delhi noted that Japan is now firmly positioned as an all-season destination for Indian travellers-where culture, modernity, and nature converge to deliver a complete travel experience.
