Naomi Osaka has been upping the ante on herself every tournament, with new dramatic ensembles for walking onto the court — for example, the parade of custom Labubus for the US Open, cute flower buns at the French, a sunflower theme at last year’s Aussie Open, and hella frills at the US Open before that. She and Nike worked with Robert Wun this year on an outfit inspired by jellyfish — her 2-year old daughter thought it was cool — and with butterflies on it as an homage to the year a butterfly stalked her during one of her matches. Naomi is someone who struggled a lot with her mental health, and the comeback from that and childbirth was hard for her; the outfits and the sense of fun they offer seem to relax her tremendously, and I think everyone else gets a huge kick out of them, so: play on, Naomi! Play on.
