Snap election in February presents wintry challenges in Hokkaido

In Sapporo’s Odori Park, preparations are underway for the Feb. 4 to 11 snow festival. But in addition to the ice sculptures, concerts and food stalls typically found at the annual event, this year’s visitors will also see Lower House politicians and their staff campaigning in subfreezing weather.

The Feb. 8 general election announced by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Monday night will be the first time in 36 years that voters have gone to the polls in February.

The timing has created two concerns in Hokkaido.
