Hakodate Japan Highlights | Views From Above, Sampling Food

Our visit to the city of Hakodate on Japan’s Northern Island of Hokkaido was earlier than expected due to a typhoon so we had to tour on our own, which worked out beautifully, Between walking and using the city’s tram system, we saw all the highlights of the fabulous city. We started the day at the Hakodate Morning Market, famous for squid, and walked around the old pier which has a disused ferry that is now a ferry museum. (We see it’s counterpart on our next stop, Aomori!). We took the tram to visit Goryokaku Tower and park. The park used to the the Fort and the tower not only provides views of Hakodate and the mountains around it but gives visitors a history lesson on the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It was a fascinating look into Japan’s history with very detailed information and dioramas. It also offers the best ice cream I have ever tried! Hokkaido is famous for dairy products and I can see why. On our way back to town, we had to try the Halloween offerings at Mister Donut! We then took the tram again and walked up to the Mt Hakodate Ropeway or cablecar. The views are incredible, you can see all of Hakodate and the surrounding areas. We finish our day with converted Red Brick Warehouses, an example of European influence in the area and a fabulous place to shop. We tried the best cheese sable biscuits I’ve ever eaten! Hakodate has a lot to offer visitors and we enjoyed our day there.

  1. I was sold on Hakodate as soon as you mentioned the best ice cream you had ever eaten. Then you mentioned a donut buffet?!? It is a snack paradise. But the beautiful mountain scenery is even better. Thanks for sharing this beautiful and delicious destination with us!
