Police in Osaka have arrested a car driver on suspicion of attempted murder and obstruction of official duties after he drove for 700 meters with a police officer on the hood.
Police arrested 40-year-old Kubo Yasunori on Thursday, based on analysis of security camera footage. He is reportedly denying the charges.
The incident occurred on Wednesday along a shopping arcade about 300 meters from Kishiwada Station in Kishiwada City. An officer noticed a white car driving along the arcade at around 5:30 p.m., a time of the day when traffic is banned.
The officer ordered the vehicle to stop. But it kept moving toward the officer, who jumped onto the hood to avoid getting hit. The vehicle continued for about 700 meters before the officer fell off, and sped away. The officer suffered bruises to his hands and knees.
Police say the suspect has admitted that he kept driving while being aware that an officer was on the hood, but said he did so without any intent to kill him.
