People aged 20 climbed the stairs of one of Japan’s tallest buildings on Monday in an annual event to celebrate reaching the age of majority.

The event under the slogan of “Let’s Step into Adulthood” was held on the Coming-of-Age Day public holiday at the Abeno Harukas skyscraper in Osaka, western Japan.

Japan’s legal age of adulthood was lowered from 20 to 18 in 2022, but many people still celebrate the milestone when they turn 20.

The roughly 60 participants wore kimono or suits and white sashes on which they had written their resolutions or dreams such as “do something good for my parents” or “try something new.”

They worked up a sweat taking about an hour to walk up 1,637 steps to the observation deck on the 60th floor.

One university student who completed the climb said she wants to help people now that she is an adult after having been supported by her parents and many others.

Her friend said the climb was hard but she was able to complete it because she was with her friend. She added that many difficulties may lie ahead, but she will persevere.
