Japan on Sunday avoided direct mention of U.S. President Donald Trump’s military strikes on Venezuela and capture of the Latin American nation’s president, saying in a statement addressing the situation only that Tokyo has “consistently emphasized respect” for international law.

“Japan has consistently respected fundamental values such as freedom and democracy,” Foreign Ministry press secretary Toshihiro Kitamura said in a statement. “It has also consistently emphasized respect for the principles of international law within the international community.

“Moving forward, based on this consistent stance, Japan will continue to work closely with relevant countries, including Group of Seven members and regional nations, to ensure the utmost protection of its citizens,” Kitamura added.
