#Shurijo or #Shuri #Castle (#首里城) is a historial landmark in #Naha, #Okinawa, #Japan. The original date of construction of this royal palace castle is unclear but historical evidence shows it served as the royal palace by the rulers of the Ryukyu Kingdom (琉球國, 1429–1879).

The castle was flattened in early 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa. After the war, the ground was turned into a university campus.

Beginning in 1992, the central citadel and walls were largely reconstructed on the original site based on historical records, photographs, and memory.

On Thursday, October 31, 2019, large parts of Shuri Castle including the three main buildings in the main courtyard were destroyed by fire. The cause of the first is still under investigation as of November 2, 2019. The national government has vowed to rebuild the destroyed buildings.
