The Toronto Blue Jays are yet to add a position player this off-season, but that could change in the coming days.
Kazuma Okamoto’s posting window closes on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET, and according to a report from Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Blue Jays are among the teams interested in signing the Japanese slugger.
Sammon added that while Okamoto is primarily seen as a corner infielder — where he played exclusively last season for the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) — his ability to play left field makes him a better fit in Toronto.
Okamoto played 15 games in the outfield in 2024.
The 29-year-old utility player missed nearly half of the 2025 season due to an elbow injury, but had a .327 average and 1.014 OPS to go along with 15 home runs and 51 RBIs in 77 games.
Okamoto crushed over 30 home runs for six consecutive NPB seasons between 2018 and 2023.
And while the Jays remain “in the mix” for the top MLB position players on the market, including being “the favourite to land (Kyle) Tucker,” according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, signing Okamoto is unlikely to limit them from landing a big fish.
Their pursuits of Tucker and longtime Blue Jay Bo Bichette are being viewed as unique opportunities, according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, allowing them to stretch beyond their current budget.
The Giants will receive a fee from whichever MLB club signs Okamoto through the posting system. They will get 20 per cent of the first $25 million of his contract, 17.5 per cent of the next $25 million and 15 per cent of any amount above $50 million.
