US President Donald Trump has invited Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to the US, with both leaders agreeing to coordinate a visit this spring, according to Japan’s foreign ministry.

During a 25-minute call on Jan 2, the two leaders discussed economic and security cooperation and reaffirmed the close partnership between the US and Japan in the Indo-Pacific. The ministry, however, did not specify whether Taiwan or China were addressed directly.

The invitation follows heightened regional tensions after Takaichi suggested in November that Japan could intervene militarily if Taiwan, claimed by China, were attacked. China responded with military drills, missile tests and trade restrictions, drawing criticism from Japan, Australia and Europe.

Trump’s outreach underscores Washington’s intent to deepen coordination with Tokyo while preparing for his April visit to China, signalling a careful balance between strengthening alliances and managing China relations in the region.
