Thousands descended upon Tokyo’s iconic Meiji Shrine on Jan. 1 morning to offer prayers for the new year in 2026.

The calendar new year is a major holiday in Japan, with large numbers of people visiting the country’s shrines to offer coins in exchange for having their wishes granted.

The Shrine is dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken. The two are honored for modernizing Japan, allowing it to emerge as a major global power within just a few decades.
