Myoko, Japan — It may be hard to believe, but there are other ski resorts in Japan that are not named Niseko. Shocking, I know. If you look far enough, there are some independent ski resorts with lots of charm.
In Myoko, there’s this family-run ski resort that many don’t know about. The owner of Seki Onsen isn’t hard to find, as he is typically selling tickets or shoveling snow. While the inbounds skiable acreage is small, it’s steep, ungroomed, and memorable. It’s all served by fixed-grip lifts, including a legendary pizza box single chair. It reminds me a bit of Mad River Glen (for the single chair) and of Beaver Mountain (for the family-run operations).
This video by Matt Guy shares the incredible skiing that’s available at this powder mecca. With it being solely fixed-grip lifts, the powder sticks around.
He concludes his day with a trip to a nearby onsen hot spring, showing how powder day in Japan can heal your mind, soul, and body. Namaste.
So if you’re a hardcore skier that’s looking for an off-the-radar ski resort, I’d say Seki Onsen is worth looking into.
