A renowned Japanese udon kitchen will soon be making its debut in Toronto. Marugame Udon is set to open in the city.
The restaurant chain was born in 2000 and “holds true to the authentic tradition of Sanuki udon which started centuries ago in the Kagawa Prefecture in the southern part of Japan,” according to the website.
Noodles are made daily using only three simple ingredients — flour, salt and water — in Marugame Udon’s open kitchen, where guests can watch as their food is prepared.
“Making udon noodles in the Marugame way is a long, time-consuming craft,” according to the team.
“We stick to what we do because we want our customers to enjoy the best taste and texture of Sanuki udon from Japan.”
Outside of Japan, Marugame Udon opened its first oversees restaurant in Hawaii in 2011. Since then, the restaurant has expanded through Asia to North America, opening 1,000 locations around the world by 2018.
In 2021, the chain launched its first European spot in London, and this year it unveiled its debut Alberta location in Calgary on Dec. 26. Marugame Udon’s other Canadian restaurant is in Vancouver, B.C.
But now, next up is Toronto. Although an official opening date has yet to be revealed, the team announced in September that an anticipated launch was coming in December.
So, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the unveiling to learn exactly when the restaurant will begin welcoming customers.
On the Marugame Udon menu, diners will find dishes like Tan Tan Udon, served in a spicy Japanese-style sesame broth and topped with slow cooked spicy ground pork and soft-boiled egg.
Or guests could try the Kake Udon, an umami fish dashi soup. Plus, a variety of tempura dishes are also on the menu, including pumpkin tempura, shrimp tempura, chicken tempura and more.
Marugame Udon’s first Toronto location will be situated at 494 Yonge St. But while waiting for this spot to open its doors, perhaps you’ll decide to dine at one of the other new restaurants that opened in the city in 2025.
