Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Monday moved from the Members’ Dormitory of the House of Representatives (the lower house of Parliament) to the official residence.
According to Ukrinform, The Japan Times conveyed this news.
The official residence of the prime minister is located in the Nagata district of Tokyo, in Chiyoda, near the government offices.
Context of the relocation and the political context
“crisis management is extremely important for governing the country”
– Sanae Takaichi
The prime minister’s husband, Taku Yamamoto, will also live at the residence to be near his wife during her rehabilitation. Yamamoto, a former member of the lower house, previously suffered a stroke.
According to Kyodo News, Takaichi’s move to the official residence occurred two months after she took office.
Although Takaichi planned to move soon after taking office, sources close to her explain that a tight diplomatic and parliamentary schedule prevented this earlier.
The official residence of the prime minister is a brick building dating from the late 1920s, where in the 1930s officers of the Imperial Japanese Army carried out two coup attempts.
In October, the Japanese Parliament expressed support for Takaichi to the post of prime minister, after which a new coalition government was formed, appointing to ministerial posts deputies who competed with her for the party leadership.
The relocation to the residence underscores the new administration’s intention to ensure effective crisis management and maintain ongoing contact with government institutions.
