Asian countries are well-known for the technologically advanced cars they bring to the market, especially when it comes to electric cars and other sustainable options. Japan and China are highly reputable for their hypercars, but in an interesting turn of events, another Asian country is stealing the spotlight with the launch of a new electric vehicle.

A solid trajectory: The rise of electric vehicles in Asia

More and more Asian governments are encouraging people to switch to electric vehicles by offering things like discounts, tax breaks, and other incentives for EV purchases. The continent has particular strengths that bode well for EV production, such as land rich in minerals needed for battery production, which has helped Asia significantly to establish its place in the EV market.

This strong production, along with urbanisation and the need for a more sustainable form of living, electric vehicles have really taken off across the continent. Notable nations include China, with companies like BYD, one of the largest EV manufacturers in the world, and Japan, which boasts industry leaders such as Toyota, Nissa, and Honda that are constantly producing innovative electric vehicles.

With updated charging stations and infrastructure supporting electric vehicles, Asia has put everything in place for successful widespread adoption. The most recent news on upcoming EVs shows that anticipated models are not coming from China or Japan, but from India, another Asian nation that is showing great promise for the future of EVs.

India is set to launch a new EV by the end of the year

Tata Motors is one of India’s largest automotive manufacturing companies, headquartered in Mumbai. The company is known for producing a wide range of vehicles, from passenger cars to commercial vehicles, and, more importantly, is focusing on electric vehicles now for the betterment of the environment.

In a highly anticipated launch, Tata is revealing their new ICE Sierra model, but more importantly, their Sierra EV model as well. While other nations are turning their backs on EVs, India is creating a foothold in the market.

Their new vehicles are paying homage to their legacy of the 1990s, reviving the Sierra that put Tata on the global market a few decades ago. The all-new version will be released first as an ICE vehicle, and then as a more sustainable EV for conscious consumers. Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, confirmed:

“The Sierra will definitely come out this calendar year, and it’ll be both in ICE and EV form.”

A closer look at the Sierra EV model

Tata is staying true to original Sierra SUV lovers, while combining modernity and sustainability into the mix. Advanced electric technology will appeal to those wanting to lower their impact on the environment, and reap the government incentives that lower-emission vehicles receive. The Sierra EV is expected to have a range of 500km, and 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic (torque converter) transmissions.

The EV is also confirmed to sport all-wheel drive (AWD), a triple screen, and 180 hp, as well as offering a choice between 65kWh and 75kWh battery packs. This model comes from a legacy and aims to create an even brighter vision for the future. The revival of iconic design elements like the wrap-around rear-side windows and boxy SUV stance shows Tata’s commitment to tradition, but at the same time, the EV shows a dedication to the innovation of tomorrow.

It is clear that India is committed to a more sustainable future, and may just give other pioneering EV companies, like the iconic BYD, a run for their money in the near future. While still producing ICE vehicles, this is a strategic move to remain loyal to long-term customers who prefer tradition, while also moving steadily towards sustainability on the side.
