Zaha Hadid Architects is set to design NOT A HOTEL’s inaugural vertex hotel in Okinawa. This will be one of the developer’s first hotel brands and the first Japanese hotel project for ZHA.

The project aims to organically integrate innovative technology and design with Okinawa’s natural environment. The hotel building will be integrated within a roughly 273,000-square-foot site nestled between a beachfront and forest.

According to NOT A HOTEL, the project prioritizes the preservation of the island’s coastal and marine ecosystems, with environmental considerations guiding the hotel’s architectural design and engineering, site strategy, material selection and procurement, and construction processes.

The design employs a modular structure and façade systems, incorporating prefabricated components. Elements will feature recycled aggregates sourced from Okinawa’s redundant structures that have reached the end of their operational lifecycles.

Forming a continuation of the existing rock formations within the site, the hotel comes together through a series of stepped, horizontal terraces, courtyards, and gardens that reflect the site’s topography.

The hotel’s distinctive canopies, as well as the use of carved Okinawa pine, limestone, and locally-produced ceramics, seek to refer to the island’s traditional vernacular architecture.
