TOKYO (TR) – A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly hitting two male bystanders with a modified vehicle on a street in Ota Ward last week.

The man is believed to have made a mistake while engaging in dangerous “drift driving,” reports TBS News (Dec. 28).

At around 2:15 a.m. on December 27, Takato Tsukiji is suspected of driving the modified vehicle on a street in Tokai and onto the median, hitting two 19-year-old men.

The two men suffered serious injuries, including fractures, police said. After the incident, Tsukiji fled the scene.

Upon his arrest on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in injury and other charges, Tsukiji, who lives in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, denied the allegations.

“I didn’t realize I had hit someone,” he said. However, he explained the crash into the central divider by saying, “I mishandled the steering wheel.”

According to police, the incident occurred on a six-lane road known as a gathering place for drivers and spectators of drifting. Police had received numerous complaints in the past.
