Mario Kart World Is the Fastest-Selling Game in the Series in Japan

Mario Kart World is proving to be a huge success, especially in Japan. The game has become the fastest-selling title in the series on Japanese soil, according to data shared by Pierre485 on Twitter (now X). Let’s take a look at the sales numbers that were revealed.

Sales Data of Mario Kart World

Mario Kart World reach 2.5m units sold in Japan (retail)
• Reaching the milestones in just 29 weeks
• Fastest selling Mario Kart game (MK Wii took 89 weeks to reach 2.5m units)
• Fastest selling NS2 game
• Best selling game of 2025 (with 1 week left) https://t.co/uxGfI2YNxK pic.twitter.com/ORxGnZuPJP

Based on the most recent data, Pierre485 created a chart comparing the sales of different Mario Kart games, showing that Mario Kart World reached 2.5 million physical copies much faster than previous titles.

Mario Kart World took only 29 weeks to reach this milestone, while Mario Kart Wii needed 89 weeks to sell 2.5 million physical units — during a generation when digital sales were far less significant than they are today.

A Record for Nintendo Switch 2

This makes Mario Kart World the fastest-selling video game on Nintendo Switch 2 and also “the best-selling game of 2025” in Japan.

It’s unclear, however, whether Pierre485 refers only to Nintendo Switch 2 titles or to all games released in Japan this year.

That said, this success isn’t too surprising. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the best-selling title on the original Nintendo Switch, and Mario Kart World was sold in a premium bundle with Nintendo Switch 2, which boosted sales compared to purchasing the console and the game separately.

According to September data (the latest available), 84% of Mario Kart World sales came from this console bundle.

However, it’s worth noting that the Nintendo Switch 2 bundle featuring Mario Kart World will soon disappear from stores.
