A Thai girl who was allegedly forced to provide sexual services at a Tokyo massage parlor has returned to Thailand.
The girl was 12 years old when her mother is said to have abandoned her at the establishment earlier this year. Tokyo police have arrested the operator of the massage parlor. The girl’s mother was arrested in Thailand on Tuesday for suspected human trafficking.
Thai officials say they coordinated with their Japanese counterparts to return the girl to Thailand. She arrived at an airport near Bangkok on Friday.
The girl is due to receive psychological care at a support facility. Police also plan to interview her.
Thai authorities and a local NGO are considering providing education and employment support so that she would not be exploited again.
Thai investigators say the mother has admitted leaving the girl at the massage parlor. But they say she is denying the trafficking charge, saying she did not intend to have her daughter provide sexual services.
