Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Afghanistan’s embassy in Japan will suspend all political, economic, cultural and consular activities in Tokyo from January 31, the Afghan embassy in Japan said in a statement.

According to the statement, the decision to suspend the Afghan embassy in Japan was taken after discussions and consultations with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs; However, no further details were provided on the exact reasons for the decision and the duration of the suspension.

The Afghan Embassy has stressed that no consular services will be provided to Afghan citizens living in Japan after the said date.

The decision comes as the status of a number of Afghan diplomatic missions in various countries is suspended or undecided due to legal, financial and political challenges, the statement said.

Japan has been a major donor to Afghanistan for more than two decades, playing an important role in reconstruction, infrastructure development, education, health, agriculture and humanitarian aid. Tokyo has spent billions of dollars in various parts of Afghanistan since 2001.

After the 2021 developments, although Japan did not recognize the Afghan interim government, it continued its humanitarian assistance through international organizations and has always emphasized support for ordinary citizens, especially women and children. The Japanese Embassy in Kabul is also active and involved in humanitarian aid.

Observers believe that the suspension of the Afghan embassy in Tokyo could have consequences for Afghan citizens living in Japan, especially in the consular services sector. The research shows that the uncertainty of the status of Afghanistan’s diplomatic missions abroad is part of the widespread political and legal challenges following recent developments that require sustainable solutions and international coordination.
