SAPPORO –

In a move that could reshape the future of megasolar development in Hokkaido and beyond, the central government plans to end support for such new large-scale solar power projects.

The government has drawn up a proposal calling for new operators to be excluded from subsidy programs starting in fiscal 2027, signaling a possible shift away from solar expansion policies promoted since the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.

The move comes amid growing local opposition to megasolar plants nationwide, especially in Hokkaido, where Gov. Naomichi Suzuki sharpened his stance earlier in December against firms seeking permission to build large-scale solar farms.
