HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaii’s star kicker, the “Tokyo Toe,” was honored on Thursday at the Honolulu City Lights.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi announced Thursday, Dec. 18, as Kansei Matsuzawa Day during UH Night for his recent and historic achievements.

The Tokyo Toe became UH’s first Consensus All-American after a breakout season that included tying the NCAA for most made field goals in a season.

“(Matsuzawa) embodies everything that you try to coach into players, and the fact that he showed up and became who he became, it’s storybook,” Blangiardi said.

Matsuzawa was joined by members of the football staff, as well as other sports like softball and men’s basketball.

“Appreciate everybody supporting me throughout my journey,” Matsuzawa said. “This is a really amazing journey, and I feel like it’s just beginning.”

Matsuzawa and the ‘Bows check into the Sheraton Waikiki Friday to begin bowl weekend.

Kickoff for the 22nd Sheraton Hawaii Bowl is Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 3 p.m.
