A shallow magnitude 5.3 earthquake was reported late at night near Nemuro, Nemuro-shi, Hokkaido, Japan.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Saturday, December 20th, 2025, at 10:30 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nemuro (pop. 31,200) located 64 km from the epicenter, Hamanaka-sakuraminami (pop. 5,500) 80 km away, Akkeshi (pop. 8,900) 95 km away, Nakashibetsu (pop. 24,000) 114 km away, Shibetsu (pop. 21,700) 115 km away, and Kushiro (pop. 167,900) 132 km away.
