Hiroshima: 24 Hours in a City That Shouldn’t Exist
Today is a very special day. We are headed to one of only two cities in the world in history that have ever been on the receiving end of a nuclear weapon. Someone in the comments is about to be screaming at us. Look at this place, Rouge. That's definitely something naughty. Kinda want to find out. Oh, dear. What are we getting ourselves into now? Hiroshima, 80 Years Later. It's nighttime here in Hiroshima. We're going to go and get some of the local food called Onamakayaki. What's it called again? Okonomiyaki. That was the same thing, man. Streets are popping, so I don't think this is going to be too problematic. Let's let this poor woman past. I've got a second wind now. We've had a little rest. So, yeah, we'll check back in with you when we find a spot. You're looking over here, are you, mate? Nightlife Entertainment Girls, you naughty boy. Blimey. I just can't get enough of these types of places. It's this tiny little building, and I'm going to be really invasive here and give you a little look. A few seats, that's it. They can serve a few customers every night. You get the most intimate experience. If you go there regularly, you probably get to know the chef and the owner. I like that. I like that. These are sick. What? So they drive on and it lifts them up. Just like that? Yeah. Does it do it all automatically, do you think? 12 spaces? This one. Is this the one? Lovely. Beautiful. How about this? Look at the head on that. That's beautiful. All right, here we go. It's pretty good. It's cheesy, it's barbecue-y. Can't say I would rush back to eat it. Can't say that. I enjoyed the service, I enjoyed the place, but the food, unfortunately, was not up to par. I think that's a fast food and should be served at street stalls. But we'll be hitting another Sushiro tomorrow. I'll be looking forward to that. We've been sat here for like 20 minutes, reflecting on the harrowing existence of nuclear weapons. It's weird. On the sixth of August at 8:15 AM, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. I'm stood here in front of one of the only buildings that survived that blast. For this video, I'm not going to dive too far into the history of what happened, but I aim to share what this city is like today, 80 years later. We've only got one day to do so, so let's get started, shall we? These trees behind me survived the blast 1,300 metres away from the epicentre, and it was able to grow a new shoots. I feel like this tree serves as a metaphor for the city of Hiroshima at whole. Don't get ideas that this is all going to be a big depressing video. We've come to Hiroshima to have a good fun day. It must be mentioned as people know this for the tragedy that happened. I think that's a bit of a shame because I'm sure there's so much more that this city has to offer. Speaking of having more to offer, do you wish you looked like James Bond when it came to your new travel accessories? Yes, I thought so. That's where Ekster comes in. Now, these ain't your regular travel accessories. These are designed quite literally to keep you on the go easier. And that's why I've incorporated them into my daily carry. This is the Ekster wallet, showcasing the space-grade aluminium frame. It's got good protections in, like this finder card is linked up to my phone. But let's be real, the best part about it is the fact that you can just get any card out at any time. This vacuum travel bag is a game changer. Let me show you how it works. Just pop in up to 10kg worth of clothes. Use the Ekster travel pump or any regular vacuum cleaner. It's so much smaller. I've got so much more room inside. Now, if you want to get your hands on some of these bad boys, then scan the QR code somewhere around me on the screen here. That's going to take you to website. Do not forget to use code: Oli10 at checkout. That's going to get you an extra little discount there. Thank you to Ekster for sponsoring today's video. Let's get back to Hiroshima. Just check out the type of cars that they have here. This is something that I perceived Japan to be like. Then when I've come here, it's just confirmed that stereotype. I don't think they're for everyone, but I think they are really, really cool. Very boxy, very spacious. Look at this one. This is like the souped-up Suzuki van. Do they export this car abroad? Because I don't see them anywhere else. This here, to me, looks like an armoured cash truck when they've got those security guards with guns. But it's actually just carrying drinks. We're here at Shukkeien Garden, commissioned in 1620. So let's go and have a look. Okay, thank you. It's funny, you always have to put the money on this little tray as you don't put it into each other's hand. Has it always been like that, or is that because of COVID? Anyway, the Shukkeien garden, the place where every tree and every plant has its purpose. These trees don't just grow like that, do they? You know these ones here? I think because I have seen a garden before where they have a bunch of ropes attached to the branches to keep them up in a certain way, so I think they sculpt them. It is almost like they've used a park as a canvas. Hello, mate. How are you? Mate, we haven't got any food for you. Chill. I just wanted to put my hand in its mouth. Oh, look. There're a bunch of little tortoises just chilling. On the east side of Shukkeien garden, you're presented with the Kyobashi River. If you're coming to Japan, you might think you've got to hit Kyoto to go and see the bamboo forest. Look no further. This garden has got it all. And to be honest, this experience in this bamboo forest is much better than the one I had in Kyoto, dipping and weaving between people's photos. What a view. I think that's Shukkeien garden done. We are going to go and do some fun stuff now. I want to go and have a look at the busier side of Hiroshima. See where all the people are. It seems they love these shopping corridors here in Japan. You wouldn't think that 80 years ago, this was all dust. This is truly a city that's been built back up from the ground. If you never learned about that history, you wouldn't know about it. It's just a regular city. What is this? It's like a food in your We've got a store full of vending machines. Nobody working. Nobody working here. It looks like you can get yourself a snack or a hot meal. They're frozen. Surely we're missing something. They're so frozen. Someone in the comments is about to be screaming at us. This is how you do it, you twat! It's very open plan, this city. It feels very spacious. A lot of green spaces, a lot of trees. It's nice. It stinks like shit. Paw wash station. How cute is that? A little shower. It's hot. I I don't reckon that's what it's for. Japan is famous for a lot of things. But if there's one thing that tops that chart, for me personally, it's got to be the convenience stores. Here we are at Family Mart. Let's go in and I'll show you why these are the best convenience stores in the world. You'll pretty much find everything in here is $1-2 this is a hot fridge. There's a whole array of pre-made meals, and you might be thinking they're a little bit crap. We're talking gourmet meals. Look at this. Egg yolk, pasta noodle salad. They got some strange stuff as well. I mean, fruit sandwich. Like, what is this? This should be illegal. Let me give you an idea of the prices. We've got a big tub of ice cream here. This one is just over $1. We've got drinks which are mostly hovering around the $1 mark. If you want to buy some noodles, you've just got an infinite selection, and they will actually cook them at the front for you. This is my kryptonite. I've been coming in here and getting a bunch of sweet things very often. Less than a dollar to come and get this coffee in the morning, and it's not bad at all. This is what I've come to get, the frappe. A pineapple orange one. Hi. Basically, it's put a bunch of hot milk in it, which I thought was super strange at first. Blend it up, and we're going to have ourselves a $2 pineapple and orange Frappe. We're heading to the best restaurant in the world. You heard it here first. [Reserving a table online] You're not going to want to miss this. We are here at Sushiro 397, we got called. [How to tell these foreigners they missed their spot] [I give up] Quick update, unfortunately, you can see we're not in Sushiro and that is because Smart. [Smart gives me angry look] Smart did nothing wrong. I made us late and we missed our number. So now we've been pushed to the back. A few minutes longer, we'll have to wait until we start getting our teeth tucked into that fish. How many plates do you reckon you're going to eat, mate? Welcome to a review of the best restaurant in the world. Look at the size of it. Would you like to play the Daku Sushi game? Yes, definitely. Oh, my goodness. We just received a prize for winning the game or something. It's a Sushiro soy sauce cup. We've got the old matcha tea you fill it up in here. They've also got free pickled ginger. It came to 5,000¥ ($32) for the two of us, and we did eat quite a lot. Great meal. But I would have to say, if I had to bone pick here, I would say the first time I had it was slightly better. I'm curious to go up in this building because on the side, it's got like 100 different signs. I bet there's some grimy stuff going on in this building. Let's go to the fourth floor. I forgot about these doors here. They will actually crush you. Really? Yeah. I feel like we're opening up into Narnia. What? Capri Hot Dogs and Bar. Just like that. There's so many buildings like this. There's just so much weird stuff going on. Oh, wow. 'Style'. What is going on behind these doors? I just want to have a little peek. Hello. It's okay. Just looking. Just looking. Just looking. Sorry. He was so excited, bless him. I think he was so excited to get a customer. It's so eerie. It's dead silent. Hardly any of the places have windows in. This is like a super exclusive little whiskey bar or something. Look at this place, ' Rouge'. What's that? What's that? That's definitely something naughty. We're curious what this is. It says Darts Bar. It's looking all elusive and premium. Look at this, man. Is this the way we go? There's a code. Oh, dear. What are we getting ourselves into now? Hi. Hello. Can we have a look? Oh, yeah. What is a darts bar? Do they actually have darts? This is not what I was expecting at all. I feel like there's just so many little hidden places. I often wonder, though, because a lot of them are empty. This is like bang in the centre of the city. There's no one here. How the hell does this place continue to stay open? Yeah, that's what's… There's so many places which are very quiet. Yeah. Very interesting. God, that was terrible. I got six! It doesn't make sense. Well and truly. I end this video in front of a sombering place, to say the least. But I would just like to urge people to actually come to Hiroshima to see it not only for the tragedy that happened, but for the city it is today. Thank you for watching.

Today, we explore Hiroshima, Japan. On 6th August, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on this city, reducing it almost entirely to ash in a single second. Today, it stands as a modern metropolis like any other.
