TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan on Monday welcomed 379 students and 20 teaching staff from Japan’s Yamagata Johoku Senior High School for the school’s field trip.

According to Tainan City Government, the high school visited sites such as Wushantou Reservoir, the Hatta Yoichi Memorial, the Confucius Temple, and Chihkan Tower. The visits are split over Monday and Tuesday, with students getting hands-on lessons in local history and culture.

Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) noted that Tainan and Yamagata City have stayed close since signing a friendship agreement in 2017. Huang said exchanges in tourism, education, and youth visits have kept building up over the years.

Field trips help young people see the world and learn about cultures, the mayor said. Huang said the city will keep rolling out travel plans linked to Taiwan-Japan ties to bring more students to Tainan again.

Yamagata City is the capital of Japan’s Yamagata Prefecture and is known for Zao Onsen and the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival. In recent years, Yamagata and Tainan have stepped up exchanges, including mango promotion, sports events, and youth visits.
