The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will hold the 39th Korea-Japan Tourism Promotion Council in Shiga Prefecture, Japan on the 15th and 16th. Since 1986, the Korea-Japan Tourism Promotion Council has been held alternately in Korea and Japan every year, contributing to the promotion of friendship between the two countries.

Last year, it was held in Gangneung, Gangwon-do, and this year, more than 80 officials from the tourism and aviation industries, including the two countries’ ministries, local governments, the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), the Japanese Government Tourism Bureau (JNTO), and the Travel Industry Association, will gather in Japan to discuss ways to expand tourism exchanges.

In particular, this year marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan, opinions will be shared on tasks such as ▲ continuous expansion of tourism exchanges between the two countries, ▲ revitalization of regional tourism, ▲ revitalization of future generation exchanges, ▲ diversification of the tourism industry, and ▲ cooperation to attract long-distance tourists.

Following the announcement of the direction of the two governments’ tourism policy, the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) and the Japanese Government Tourism Bureau (JNTO) will exchange with the Korea-Japan Tourism Association on ways to expand tourism.

In addition, it seeks ways to revitalize regional tourism in both countries. Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do and Shiga Prefecture in Japan introduce strategies to attract tourists using various tourism resources such as attractions and food that can only be experienced locally.

The Yeosu Island Expo Organizing Committee will announce the “2026 Yeosu World Island Expo” held in September next year as an example of revitalizing local tourism. Cheongju International Airport, Japan’s Kansai Tourism Headquarters, and Kansai International Airport also plan to present opinions to promote tourism exchanges between the two countries.

“We will seek cooperation measures based on the common interests of the two countries, such as revitalizing regional tourism, so that stable exchanges between Korea and Japan can continue in the tourism sector,” said a policy official at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
