Seismic activity remains high off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture following a magnitude-7.5 earthquake on Monday. Japan’s Meteorological Agency is urging people along the northern Pacific coast and elsewhere to stay vigilant against a possible mega quake.
The agency says there is a relatively high possibility that a strong tremor could occur along the Japan Trench or the Chishima Trench off Hokkaido.
An advisory is in place for subsequent earthquakes off the coast of Hokkaido or Sanriku. It covers 182 municipalities in the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Chiba.
Monday’s earthquake registered an intensity of upper 6 on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 in the city of Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture.
Following the quake, tsunami warnings and advisories were issued for various coastal areas in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region. A 70-centimeter tsunami was observed at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture.
On Friday, a magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck. The tremors reached an intensity of 4 across much of the Tohoku region and Hokkaido.
A tsunami advisory was briefly issued for coastal areas from Hokkaido to Miyagi Prefecture. A 20-centimeter tsunami was observed in the town of Erimo in Hokkaido and Hachinohe Port in Aomori Prefecture.
As of 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, there had been 36 quakes with an intensity of 1 or higher following Monday’s strong jolt.
