DULLES, Va. (7News) — A United Airlines flight bound for Tokyo returned to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) Saturday afternoon after experiencing a loss of power in one engine shortly after takeoff, according to airline and federal officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said United Airlines Flight 803, a Boeing 777-200ER, returned to Dulles around 1:20 p.m. local time on Dec. 13, after reporting an engine issue during departure.

In a statement provided to 7News, United Airlines said the aircraft returned safely to Dulles to address the engine power loss.

“Shortly after takeoff, United Flight 803 returned to Washington Dulles and landed safely to address the loss of power in one engine,” United said. “There were no reported injuries. United is grateful to our crews and to the teams at Washington Dulles for their work to help ensure the safety of everyone involved.”

United said there were 275 passengers and 15 crew members on board at the time of the incident.

Airport officials confirmed that around 12:20 p.m., the aircraft ignited brush near the runway while departing. The fire was quickly extinguished by airport fire crews.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue also responded to Dulles to provide mutual aid for several small brush fires along the runway area. Officials said the fires were contained without further incident.

To assist affected passengers, United temporarily closed a United Club lounge at Dulles, allowing staff to help customers rebook and continue their travel. The airline said it is scheduling a different aircraft to operate the flight to Tokyo later Saturday.
