A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has struck north of Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency says there is no tsunami threat.
The agency says the quake occurred in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at 7:05 p.m. and had a maximum intensity of 4 out of 7 on the Japanese scale. It had an intensity of 3 in central Tokyo.
Earlier on Friday, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture at 11:44 a.m. at a depth of 17 kilometers.
Tsunami waves as high as 20 centimeters were later observed in parts of Hokkaido and Aomori. A tsunami advisory was lifted early in the afternoon.
