Day trip to Kyoto’s most sacred temple šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µ

Good afternoon from Kyoto, Japan. Just got off the train. It took about 20 minutes from Shinosak and I had a pretty much walk there from where my hotel was, which is a long walk. But anyway, I’m here in Kyoto for the first time since last year. Glad to be back. Just going to walk around. I’m not going to hit too many of the major touristy sites as far as like temples go, but I will hit up a couple, at least one I have in mind. I’ve got about a 45minute walk till I get there. So, take you guys along with me and we’ll we’ll see if we find what Kyoto’s about. Oh, one other thing that I wanted to mention. my thought. I don’t know if I’m the only one who always thought this, but in my mind, I always thought Kyoto was this small, quaint town overrun by tourists. Now, it is some of those things, definitely the tourist piece, but it is actually a city of nearly one and a half million people. Major metropolitan area. Pretty much get anything you want here, like any other major city. So, but I’m going to just keep walking till I get to the first shrine that I want to show you guys. [Music] So, I’m about halfway through my walk to the shrine we’re going to, but I want to tell you guys a little bit about what Kyoto is. Kyoto is cultural capital of Japan. Very old. There’s dozens if not hundreds of different shrines, British shrines, Shinto shrines, all sorts of things here. And a lot of them are very famous. A lot of tourists go to them, but I’m going to take you to my favorite one, which is not very busy, if it’s anyone’s there at all, but it’s it’s one of the coolest places, I think, and I’m told that it is the most sacred place in Kyoto. So, we’re almost there. We’ll catch up when we get there. I was just showing there is like checking out those stamps. So in Japan you you everybody gets you have to pay for it but you get like a stamp and it’s essentially your unique signature in order to open up something like a bank account here. You have to have a stamp. Now you can still get one if you’re not even if you’re just a tourist here you’re visiting. You can go buy one of those stamps and have the the guy I don’t know what what it would be called, but it’s a custom creator will will create your own custom stamp for you can use. And then if you were here as an expat, you would have to get one of those for open up bank accounts and things like that. So, they’re kind of cool. I think they’re uh they’re neat and definitely a unique gift if you wanted to get one for somebody. [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Okay, so I just got to the N castle. It’s a beautiful castle. I’ve never been in it. I’m not going to go in there today, but I just wanted to show it to you as a point of reference of where we are because this next place is well, hopefully there’s not a lot of people there, but last time I was there, I had it all to myself. So, I’ll bring it bring you along with me and show you this next temple. I’m not really big on temples, to be honest. They’re there’s they’re all over the place and there’s something here in Japan that tourists they get temple burnout and that’s in my experience that’s a real thing just going around to so many temples and you just get tired. They all kind of they all kind of look the same after a while. They’re big, they’re beautiful, they’re crowded with people but you know you seen one I’m not going to say you’ve seen them all cuz they all they all are a little bit different but there is a lot of overlap in them. and it’s just like, oh wow, you look at the architecture, it’s beautiful, the history, it’s been here for hundreds of years and all that, but I don’t know. So, but this one here has always stood out of my heart. So, I want to show it to you here. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Okay, so I just got to the Shinsen Temple. I’m going to put that name up on the screen because I’m sure that I slaughtered that saying. But anyway, last time I was here, I found this shrine just walking around and it was at night and there was only one other person here and the woman was a Japanese woman. She spoke spoke very good English and she was telling us that this is the most sacred place in all of Kyoto. and she said, “A legend has it this bridge here that I’m walking across that I’ll show. If you want to make a wish, you come to the middle of this bridge and you can make your wish and it’s said to come through.” I don’t know if that’s true, but it is a very off the beaten path shrine here. There’s not a lot of people here. There’s maybe 10 people tops, and this is prime time in the day to be here. So, it’s definitely a hidden gem in my favorite temple or shrine or I’m not sure exactly what it’s called. I’ll put it up if it’s a temple or shrine up on the screen, too. But it’s really cool. Highly suggest this. And uh take a look. It’s beautiful. It’s quiet. It’s serene. There’s lots of carp in the water in the pond. Some ducks here. And yeah, and it and you want it you want it all to yourself, come here at night cuz that I guarantee you will get it to yourself at some point. [Music] All right. So, now I’m going to walk down to the old town which is referred to I’m going to try to put this I’m going to try to pronounce this correctly and I’m also going to put on the screen because I I have a tendency of slaughtering a lot of these foreign language words here. So, it is Higashi Higashiyama district which is the old town. It’s a lot of windy little back alleys and it’s uh quite beautiful. So, I’m going to make my way that way, that direction. And I’ve got, let’s see here. All right. Says it’s an hour and 15 minutes, about 5.2 kilometers. It’s right around 3 miles. So, it’s definitely definitely a little hike over, but I’m going to I’m going to do it anyway. I need the steps and uh it’s a beautiful day. Why not? So, catch up you guys when I get closer. [Music] All right, I lied. I’m not going all that way. What I thought in my mind where I was going and I Google it, two different things. The one thing that I thought it was is 5.2 km away. The place where I’m going is 2 km away. I don’t know the name of it yet. I’m going to get that to you guys here in a second when I arrive here, but I’m almost there. It’s a nice walk. Like I said, just about 2 km or so. A little over I don’t know, mile and a quarter or so, something like that. But I’ll be there shortly. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Okay. So, I’m down on the I guess it’s a river, very shallow river. I don’t know, maybe a foot, two feet deep. But I overshot where I want to go on purpose because I wanted to come down here and check out this river area. It’s it’s beautiful. It’s a great bike path. A lot of places to walk. A lot of people out here reading, napping, just enjoying this nice fall afternoon. So, I just wanted to show you guys some of this here before I come up into the what I was calling the old town. I got still got to figure out the name of it, but I’ll figure that out in a little bit here. [Music] [Music] This is the area I’ve been shooting for it’s a uh very narrow narrow road basically only pedestrians and maybe a couple bikes but I don’t think those are I think those are prohibited in this area but it’s very narrow and it’s just restaurant to restaurant on both sides of this here you can see it’s restaurant restaurant very cool area awesome place to walk I am on a search cuz I have not eaten since breakfast so I need to find something to eat real quick. And so I’m going to pop into one of these places and see if there’s something good to eat. Catch up in a bit. [Music] Okay, I just sat down the place. So, I’m getting the Omu Rice, I believe it’s called. Let me take a make sure. Yeah, Omu Rice. O M U R I see. But I’ll put it up on the screen. There is a famous place not far from here that but you got to sign up and it’s the guy puts on a show and all this other stuff. But this is uh it’s another traditional one. You don’t have to wait in line. So, I’m going to give this a go. And it’s like what it is. It’s like a rice omelette. Omelette with rice and then some sort of ketchup on it. But u I’ll walk you through it here. [Music] Oh, it’s very good. So, like I was saying, it’s a it’s a rice omelette. This is just an omelette and it’s filled with rice and then it’s got this ketchup on it and it’s delicious. It’s not too sweet. It’s like a little b It’s a perfect balance of like sweet and savory here. Yeah. If you can’t get it in that famous place, definitely definitely at least try this famous dish here. A little easier with the spoon. Okay, that place is outstanding. Uh highly recommend it. I don’t know exactly where it is, but just if you’re looking for Omo Rice, you don’t want to go to that super famous Instagram famous one which you got to wait in line, sign up for the QR code to get reservations day of, come back later on. There’s other options out there and I would highly recommend exploring those options cuz there it is a dish that’s not to be missed. It’s very good. Good sweet and savory balance. All right, so now I heard there’s a local market here. I was talking to a few people in that restaurant and they mentioned there’s a market here. I’m going to go check that out and see if that’s worth filming or anything else. But, uh, yeah, I’ll bring you there with me. I made a little pit stop in here and the door is wide open. Had some beers here, so I stopped in for a quick beer. Then I’m going to continue on my journey. But Kungpai, cheers. [Music] That’s the spot. Very good. Just leaving that bar after one beer. I don’t know. I may have gotten fleece there cuz I went in there saw they had Heineken on draft which I love Heineken on draft and 700 yen which is $4.55 exactly point to that say I wanted Heineken and he goes and pours me a curin and then he tells me after that oh we don’t have Heineken so I don’t know should I be pissed no that’s not going to upset me but I really could have gone for unfortunately had I had with cure But you know what? I’m in Japan. Should drink Japanese beer, right? Keep going to that market here. [Music] I was going to this market and I was like, “Oh, just another market. Same It’s all the same.” But I finally found something that I’ve seen before. It’s a little octopus here and it’s filled with a quail egg and then it’s like roasted. I don’t know what it is, but I’ve seen them before and I’m going to try it and see how it is. Let’s go for it. So, it’s like the yolk and a little baby octopus. That’s all it is. It’s all right. I’ve been wanting to try one for a while and I did. Excellent. Just got off the train back in Osaka back to my hotel. Kyoto was fun, but let me tell you, it is definitely one of the places that you need a lot more time. I’d say four or five days would be a good amount time in Kyoto. You can see a lot of things in that. But I mean, hell, if I had if I had more time, I’d take you guys along for see a lot more of the temples and some of the other touristy sites. So, I just wanted to show you some of my favorite parts of Kyoto. But it’s a great city. I enjoyed my day. Had a good time. Almost back to my hotel now. So, I’m going to wrap this one up. Thank you for watching. Please subscribe, like, comment, and share. And there’ll be more coming from Japan. Talk to you guys later. Have a good night.

  1. I bought my mom a custom stamp when we were there! Only souvenir she asked for from there. Our Japanese friend helped us get it customized for her
