TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) attended the opening of the Ikebana International Fair in Tokyo on Wednesday to promote products from his city’s farming sector.
Tainan was the only Taiwanese city invited to the event, per CNA. Huang recently toured France and the Netherlands, where he promoted fruit from Tainan, including guavas and pineapples.
Princess Takamado opened the fair in the presence of ambassadors and envoys from 24 countries, ikebana artists, and representatives of international groups. Orchids and anthuriums from Tainan featured on the princess’s table for the opening lunch, the city government said.
Huang saw the presence of the flowers as a way to promote city diplomacy and Tainan’s farm-based business sectors. Tainan was represented at the Hotel New Otani as “Tainan, Taiwan, the City of Flowers and Fruits.”
Dried mangoes, dried dragon fruit, and mullet roe were available for visitors to taste, reflecting the diversity of Tainan’s food products, the city government said.
