Justin Trudeau and his new girlfriend Katy Perry have made a series of social media appearances these past few days, but it hasn’t been without controversy.
The Canadian politician and the pop star first appeared in a photo shared on Friday by former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida after the group spent time together in Japan.
In the pic posted to X, 41-year-old Perry – who is seen wearing a cropped blazer and miniskirt over black stockings and boots – stood next to Kishida’s wife, Yuko, who wore a more conservative ensemble.
“Former Canadian Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau visited Japan with his partner and joined my wife and me for lunch,” wrote Kishida on X, in a caption translated from Japanese to English.
Trudeau, 53, reposted the photo to his own X account, writing, “‘Great to see you @kishida230. Katy and I were so glad to have the chance to sit down with you and Yuko. Thank you, Fumio, for your friendship and your continued commitment to both the international rules-based order and to a better future for everyone.”

However, the wholesome photo has been slammed by fans who thought Perry’s choice of attire in a formal setting was “inappropriate”.
“Her outfit looks absolutely inappropriate for this type of diplomatic engagement,” one fan tweeted, as another commented, “That’s what she decided to wear? I feel like I’m being trolled.”
“Wouldn’t kill her to consult a stylist if she will be the former head of state’s +1 at official events, though,” yet another tweeted, as one agreed, “Can she get a fashion adviser?! Short skirt and the boots [hides face emoji].”

Other X users took issue with Kishida’s inability to properly name Perry, simply referring to her a Trudeau’s “partner”.
“Sir this is the Katy Perry you’re talking about,” one user tweeted, as another helped point out, “that’s KATY PERRY, global pop icon tbh.”
“Are we just going to ignore Katy Perry,” another wondered, as one commented, “U meant @katyperry and her partner* Mr Kishida.”
The couple’s trip coincides with the Japan pit stop of Perry’s global Lifetimes Tour where she performed to a packed house at the Saitama Super Arena on December 3.
