Kushiro Wood Products Ltd. is constructing a new sawmill in the city of Kushiro in eastern Hokkaido, Japan, with equipment installation set to begin in the spring-summer of 2027 and production start scheduled for early 2028, according to the technology supplier Hekotek.

The facility will be equipped with a complete log sorting line, a log infeed system, and a sawmill residuals collecting and removal system. The equipment is designed to feed logs at varying speeds to a Valon Kone debarker and a HewSaw sawline. The technological solutions are intended to minimize the proportion of human labor in the production process.

The mill will process softwood harvested directly on Hokkaido. The sawn timber produced will be sold primarily to the Japanese domestic market.

The investment represents an expansion of operations for Kushiro Wood Products, a joint venture largely owned by the family-owned company Sunadaya Cypress. Sunadaya Cypress has operated for over 120 years and currently runs two sawmills in the Matsuyama region.
