Defense Minister Nikos Dendias met with his Japanese counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi in Tokyo on Thursday, marking the first meeting between the defense ministers of Greece and Japan.

Dendias said the meeting allowed him to explain Greece’s challenges and to understand Japan’s perspective. “Greece and Japan are two naval nations,” he said, noting that Japan’s experience as a signatory of the Treaty of Lausanne and the Treaty of Montreux gives its views on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) particular importance for Greece.

The Greek minister also discussed potential cooperation between Japan’s Defense Innovation Science & Technology Institute and Greece’s Hellenic Center for Defence Innovation SA (ELKAK). He said he invited Koizumi to visit Greece, another first.

Following the ministers’ meeting, delegations held extended talks. Dendias spent Wednesday and Thursday meeting other officials, visiting research institutes, the House of Representatives, and the Japan Greece Society, accompanied Wednesday by Deputy Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office and Deputy Defense Minister of Japan Shinji Yoshida.
