建築素人でも楽しめた!京都モダン建築祭+レトロ喫茶でひと休み
Osaka Umeda Station. This time, I’m going to the Kyoto Modern Architecture Festival, held annually. It began in 2022 as a project commemorating the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ relocation to Kyoto. Existing modern architecture in Kyoto is open to the public. I love looking at architecture, and I enjoy appreciating it as a hobby. I didn’t study architecture, so I don’t know the intricacies, but I want to appreciate its beauty . So, let’s head to Kyoto! This year’s Kyoto Modern Architecture Festival is scheduled to feature a record 126 buildings. The first half is open on November 1st (Sat) and 2nd (Sun), and the second half is open on November 8th (Sat) and 9th (Sun). The buildings open to the public vary depending on the open day. I chose November 8th because there were many buildings I wanted to see. Among them, some are selected by lottery. It may be quite a challenge to see all 126 buildings. Kawaramachi. Each facility opens at 10:00 AM. I’m off for breakfast. I’m heading to a coffee shop I’ve always wanted to try. The place I’m heading to is Rokuyosha Coffee. It’s a 7-minute walk from the station. Rokuyosha Coffee. It’s so chic! Founded in 1950 as a basement store, it opened its first floor store in 1968. The first floor is like a coffee shop. They serve breakfast there. The atmosphere is amazing. The walls are decorated with deep green tiles and vintage lighting fixtures. It feels like time has stopped. It truly has the feel of a “Showa-era Kyoto modern coffee shop.” The atmosphere is calm and tranquil. It’s a great atmosphere. As for the menu, the breakfast menu looks like this. The full breakfast set is 900 yen. The breakfast all set is 900 yen. The shop got crowded, so I had to share a table. You can choose butter or marmalade for your toast. And eggs. You can choose coffee or tea. Vegetable juice. This is great! The cups and saucers are elegant and stylish. The retro, chic interior is beautiful no matter how many times I look at it! It had a nostalgic taste. Sprinkle with salt. It was healthy. When I drank it, the tomato flavor was strong. As for the coffee, it had a mellow, deep flavor. It had a nostalgic feel. It also had a rich flavor . It was an elegant moment. The nostalgic space was amazing. Now, let’s tour the Modern Architecture Festival. First, we went to the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater. It’s about a 19-minute walk from here. Along the way, we stopped by The Gate Hotel Kyoto Takasegawa. The opening dates didn’t work out, so we weren’t able to visit. I’ve stayed there before, and the interior was amazing. There’s also a video of our stay, so please take a look if you’re interested. We also filmed the former Jikkyo Room. There was a boat. It was on display, as the Takasegawa River is right next to it. I wonder if it’s only available at this time of year? There was an art piece on the Takasegawa River. The weather was nice and pleasant. We arrived. This was my first time here. Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater. This traditional theater in Gion Kobu, one of Kyoto’s most historic and prestigious geisha districts, is a designated national tangible cultural property. It looks like a castle! This building is the Imperial Hotel Kyoto, scheduled to open on March 5, 2026. I could never afford to stay there. I guess it would cost the accommodation fee, but I’d love to stay there at least once. So, let’s go. I already purchased my passport in advance. It was 3,000 yen. It’s 3,000 yen for two days. It has a great atmosphere! The red lantern with the “tsunagi dango” crest is a symbol of Gion Kobu. It was temporarily closed in 2016 (Heisei 28) for earthquake-resistant renovations and other reasons. After approximately six years of extensive construction, it was renovated and reopened in 2023 (Reiwa 5) as the venue for the Miyako Odori dance. The building is a large, two-story theater built entirely of cypress wood in a purely Japanese style. Its dignified and elegant appearance is a defining feature. This was my first time inside. I was overwhelmed by its formality and elegance. This is the main venue for the Miyako Odori dance , a seasonal event that represents spring in Kyoto. This feels like a special seat. The current building was built in 1913. Let’s go outside. There was a garden outside. What is this? This was the annex, which dates back to the same time as the main building. It was built in 1913. It is a very historic wooden building. I returned to the main building. Let’s go up to the second floor. This is the view from the second floor. The elegant and profound space was truly beautiful. Next, I went to the nearby Goryukaku. It’s about a 17-minute walk from here. I’ll use this ticket to enter next time. I’ll pass by Kenninji Temple. The autumn leaves are beautiful! By the time this video is released, the leaves will be in full bloom. Hokanji Temple. It’s likely to be crowded as we pass through Sannenzaka. It’s currently just before 11:00, but it’s already packed. Goryukaku. Goryukaku is a historic Western-style building built during the Taisho era. It’s lovely! This was the residence of the third-generation Matsukaze Yoshitada, a Meiji-era entrepreneur who developed the Kiyomizu-yaki pottery into an international business. Let’s go up to the top. Antique stained glass emitting colorful light is displayed throughout. It’s a Taisho-era romanticism. Since it was a mansion, there’s a fireplace. The lighting fixtures feel modern. There’s a terrace, so let’s check it out. There’s a fountain. The Japanese-style tiled roof is combined with Western design. It’s a beautiful blend of Japanese and Western styles. Let’s go see the cafe on the first floor. There’s a fireplace there, too. We’re on the first floor. This is “CAFE Goryukaku.” There’s an interesting table here. It was installed during the current owner’s time. It’s custom-made with a Kyoto motif. The craftsmanship is intricate. It’s a place that gives you a sense of Taisho-era romance. Next, we take the bus to Shoan. It takes about 40 minutes from here. Loose Kyoto. We take a short break here. Their donuts are also popular. They value the flavor of the ingredients. They are made with the utmost care by the artisans. This place has a modern and stylish atmosphere. Matcha latte 700 yen. The unique sweetness of matcha was great. There is one table here, but most of the seating is on benches . It’s a stylish cafe with a modern atmosphere. We board the bus from Kiyomizu-michi. I think it’s here. But no… Even though it’s the same bus stop, Kiyomizu-michi, the stop changes depending on the destination. The bus heading north is empty. Arrived. It’s a short walk from here. About a 17-minute walk. This is Kyoto University. There’s modern architecture here too. I’ll come back later. There’s a torii gate! Over there is Yoshida Shrine. “Yoshida Shrine” was founded as a guardian deity protecting the northeast (the direction of evil spirits) of Heian-kyo. It is an ancient and very prestigious shrine. The sub-shrines within the shrine grounds are dedicated to gods with very unique fields of expertise. The shrine’s name is “Kaso Shrine.” It is said that Hayashi Join-no-mikoto , who is said to have been the first to make manju in Japan, is enshrined here. At the Daigen-gu Shrine, a sacred place within the grounds , 3,132 of the eight million gods from all over Japan are enshrined together. The ultimate power spot! A Nadeka! I was surprised because I thought it would be a Nadeushi. Yoshida Shrine is quite large. This is Moan. It feels like you’re on top of a mountain. It feels like you’re climbing a mountain. Google says this is the road, but I wonder if it’s correct. Be careful of bears. There are lots of acorns, and it feels like a bear might be around. Is there a cafe in a place like this? There’s a sign, so maybe it’s just a little further. It looks like it . It’s usually a cafe, but it’s closed today. I can see it! It looks like a mountain lodge. Moan. This cafe is a renovated version of a “chaen” (tea garden) built by businessman Mojiro Tanigawa during the Taisho era. Let’s take a look inside. The building is designated as a national tangible cultural property. The second floor is a cafe space. Based on the concept of a “mountain retreat in the city,” it offers a tranquil space away from the hustle and bustle. The buildings are scattered around this area. You can even see the Daimonji characters from here. It’s beautifully visible from this side (^^). The lighting is nice, too (^^). I’d like to come back here for the cafe. Each piece is tastefully crafted. Next, I’ll visit the private tea room. The cafe wasn’t open, though. There was a temporary shop set up. Over there is the Seikantei teahouse. Its greatest feature is its basement. Is that it? Looking at the building we were in earlier from this angle, it feels like it’s nestled in the forest. Let’s go inside. You can see the skillfully interlocked beams. The windows are large and open. It embodies the tea ceremony concept of “mountain retreat in the city.” The skillfully interlocked beams made of bent wood are amazing. Let’s go see the basement. It’s covered in vibrant decorative tiles. Its design is hard to believe it was a teahouse. Apparently, it was used as a wine cellar when it was first built. The tiles have a modern feel. There’s another teahouse, so let’s go inside. Over there. There’s a wooden deck. Is that a side door? Wow. I can see the Daimonji character from here. The roof is covered in copper sheets. The 6-tatami tea room is at the center. There’s a 4.5-tatami anteroom, a kitchen, a bathroom, and more. You can really feel the passage of time. Currently, it’s available for rental as a teahouse for events and tea ceremonies. It’s a valuable building that conveys the essence of “modern refined space.” It’s time for lunch. It’s a popular udon restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide. It’s about an eight-minute walk from here. Ikazuchi Udon. This restaurant is listed in the Michelin Bib Gourmand. Its motif is thunder. It’s a very popular restaurant, and it gets quite busy at lunchtime. As for the menu, they offer a wide variety of udon noodles with toppings. They also serve tsukemen. A sticky note listed the daily menu. At first glance, it feels more like a cafe than an udon restaurant. The space is stylish and clean. I ordered the fried vegetable curry udon for 1,460 yen. It’s today’s special udon, and I think the contents change daily. The fried vegetables were peppers, eggplant, pumpkin, okra, and garland chrysanthemum. The vegetables were huge! It was topped with a generous amount of finely chopped fried vegetables. The menu said it was green onions, but the ingredients have changed. Wow. This udon seems to have a strong, chewy texture. First, the soup. Delicious. Diluted with natural dashi. Rich yet elegant and easy to drink. The portion is huge. It seems to be about 1.5 times the size of regular udon. It’s also delicious with fried tofu. The Japanese-style curry soup blends well. It was worth waiting in line. Curry udon is perfect for this coming season. The refined flavor of the dashi . The curry soup and udon were absolutely delicious . Next, we head to Kyoto University. It’s a 17-minute walk from here. Kyoto University Sonjodo Hall. Sonjodo Hall is a single-story brick and plaster building. It is a rare example of Western-style architecture at the time. Despite its brick construction, it has a compact, storehouse-like exterior. Its design is a blend of Japanese and Western styles. The name Sonjodo Hall is… It originates from the late Edo period ideology of “Sonno Joi” (Revere the Emperor and Expel the Barbarians). It was registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property in 1998. It currently serves as the resource room for the Kyoto University Graduate School of Letters’ Center for Cultural Heritage Studies and Humanities Collaboration . The Western atmosphere can be felt in places. Among the exhibits were buried cultural assets (finale of excavations). It was a quiet place with a deep historical atmosphere. Next, we headed to Kamoike Hall. It’s a bit far from here, about a 27-minute walk. Along the way, we came across a Registered Tangible Cultural Property: the Kyoto University YMCA Hall and Jishio Dormitory. So cool! It’s said to be the oldest surviving university YMCA hall in Japan. Vories architecture is so cool (^^). There are many Vories buildings in Omihachiman. We’ve come all the way to the Kamo River. Stepping stones. Oh, there are stepping stones here too. Let’s go. Turtles. This area has been turned into a park. Kamoike Hall. The main building of Kamoike Kaikan is known as a valuable example of modern architecture from the early Showa period. While based on Showa modernist architecture, it features a unique style that incorporates Japanese design elements. This area gives off a Showa-era modern vibe. The lovely corridors give it a Showa-era feel, as it was once the alumni hall of a girls’ school. There’s also a tea room inside. This is the tea room. It has a tea room atmosphere. Next, I head to the building I wanted to see the most. Most Modern Architecture Festivals end at 4:00 PM, so this will be the last one. My next stop is St. Agnes Church, about a 16-minute walk from here. It’s been a while since I last visited the Imperial Palace. I can see it. St. Agnes Church. It seems like there’s quite a long line. This is one of Kyoto’s most important modern Western-style buildings. The three-story bell tower rising from the northeast corner (Karasuma Shimotachiuri corner) serves as an accent, creating a dignified exterior. It was very popular. There was a limit on admission. The bricks are laid in English bond. Another unusual feature is the use of “key bricks” instead of “keystones” to support the arch above the entrance. Amazing. Wood is used extensively inside. Compared to European stone churches, it has a warm atmosphere. Stained glass. There are over 30 stained-glass windows. It decorates the walls of the church. I took a seat. I could feel the warmth of the wood. The high ceiling created an open and solemn space. The pipe organ is the acoustic and visual symbol of the church. Apparently, there’s going to be a performance soon. It’s being performed by students from Heian Jogakuin University. The organ’s unique soft tone and majestic, solemn sound create a sacred space for prayer. It was my first experience and it was fantastic. This place is incredibly popular. There are places that are open until 5:00 PM , so I recommend checking them out. It’s in Gion, so it’s a bit far, but I’ll walk to keep healthy. It’s been a while since I’ve been to ShinPuhkan . I ‘ve made it to Shijo Ohashi Bridge. My next destination is the Gion Kurochiku Building . Designed by world-renowned architect Fumihiko Maki, the Gion Kurochiku Building is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. Let’s go to its most famous location. There’s an open-ceiling courtyard. Oh! That’s it! Even indoors, the design allows you to enjoy natural light and sunlight filtering through the trees. The cylindrical shape at the top of the building is said to have been inspired by sake barrels. It’s a modern interpretation of the Tsubo-niwa (small garden) concept. It was truly beautiful. Finally, I went to a coffee shop I’d always wanted to try. It’s a 20-minute walk from here. It has a hidden, secret base-like atmosphere (^^). Okaffe Kyoto. It had a relaxing, laid-back atmosphere, like a coffee shop. The menu, featuring carefully selected blends and espresso, uses beans roasted by the owner, Mr. Okada, himself. There was a wide variety of authentic coffee and creative food and sweets designed to complement the coffee. The drinks were particularly extensive. My target today was this pudding (^^). The hamburger was a specialty, and the Pan Dorayaki (breaded Dorayaki) is apparently their specialty . The hard-boiled pudding (600 yen) is a pudding with a sophisticated, adult flavor. This is a classic coffee shop pudding. The bowl and plate are nice (^^). When I tried it, it had a firm, firm texture. It had a firm elasticity and density. The caramel sauce had a deep, bitter flavor. It was a slightly bitter caramel. The accompanying cream had a rich flavor. It was the perfect match with the pudding. Enjoying it with a dark roast “Dandy Blend” coffee, which has a bitter and rich flavor , is said to be the perfect pairing. The location felt like a hideaway. The coffee shop also had a nostalgic feel. Cafes are great, but coffee shops with a nostalgic feel are also nice. This was my first time attending the Kyoto Modern Festival. I was able to experience the depth of Kyoto and the charm of modern architecture all at once. It was an extremely valuable event. I would definitely like to participate again next year. Thank you for watching this far. See you in the next video!

因みに、阪急梅田駅のホームって、ピカピカしてませんか?阪急四条駅(烏丸線四条駅乗り換え)は、河原町駅の次ですか(・・;
今回もありがとうございました(*^^*)
