Why Tokyo’s Old Coffee Shops Matter ☕ Japan Walking Tour

Which one is better? An old cafe with 100 years of history or a popular modern cafe in Tokyo? Kayaba Coffee is one of the oldest cafe in Tokyo. But here is what’s wild. Despite many new cafes want to have modern aesthetic, this coffee shop does not follow the trend yet has kept its traditional Japanese interior design and has retrained the atomos of the shower era. But this is not the only reason why local Japanese love here. Although the shop originally was a candy shop in 1916 and then was convened to a cafe in 1938, many customers fall in love with their iconic egg sandwich. The fluffy scrambled eggs with a thin layer of mayonnaise simply seasoned with salt and pepper. Japanese cafes always have the staple egg sandwich and this cafe version has good reputation to be more delicious than other cafe. But this is the crazy part. Japanese can be very picky on reviewing restaurants. They can give bad reviews easily.

  1. Old cafés are the best anywhere in the world. This one is definitely one of the best atmospheres, and if I lived in Japan, I'd probably be a regular. 😊

  2. Comparison here is improper sir. Compare modern to modern, classic to classic. A modern café in block A v. a modern café in block B. Something like that sir is proper.

  3. I think I have a lot in common with modern Japanese people, between new vs old cafe I would prefer to stay home and make my own coffee, sorry about our trashy tourists, they don’t even know the value of their own places

  4. old cafe for me please, i like history.
to elaborate; a modern cafe has yet to make history and so the story is rather short and narrow.
an old cafe has many many stories to tell, experience and usually the best aesthetics in my humble opinion.

  5. Depending on your level of patriotism historical sites are highly valued even at the cost of luxury and convenience.

  6. Are you trying to get tourists to visit this place?Am I alone in thinking this post is strange and antithetical to what this channel is trying to say?
