Hokkaido Governor Suzuki Naomichi has suggested he will support the restart of a reactor at the Tomari nuclear power plant.

Suzuki’s comments came during a prefectural assembly session on Friday about the plant’s No.3 reactor.

“The utilization of the Tomari nuclear power plant is considered a realistic option for the time being,” he said.

The governor also said the reactor complies with new safety standards and a restart will help lower electricity bills and ensure a stable power supply.

The reactor passed regulatory screening in July, which is a prerequisite for a restart.

Four nearby municipalities have already given their approval. Suzuki will now inspect the plant and hold discussions with local mayors.

He will also take into consideration debate in the prefectural assembly before making a final decision.
