Hidden in plain sight : the altars of Fushimi Inari-taisha (Kyoto)

One of the most visited shrines in Kyoto (Japan) is Fushimi Inari Taisha.
Fushimi Inari-taisha is the head shrine with which all the others Shinto shrines are affiliated.
The site is known for its over 1000 Tori gates (Senbon Torii) that lead from the main shrine up the Inari mountain (Inariyama).
Walking through the gates seems to be the main activity of most tourists. But right to the side are hundreds of interesting smaller shrines and altars.
Smaller shrines (hokora), sites of former shrines where deities remain (shinseki), worshiping stones engraved with deities’ names (otsuka), shrine gateways (torii) and other features can be found throughout this holy area. Few people seem to stop and take a closer look at the altars. In this video you can get an idea.
