We Visit Japan’s Scenic Akasawa Forest Railway in Nagano Prefecture
Japan’s Akasawa Forrest Railway in Nagano Prefecture recreates just a small portion of the once vast Kiso Forest Railway network. The latter once extended some 500km, winding along creeks and rivers flowing into the Kiso and hauling valuable Hinoki Pine & Cedars used in the building & restoration of Japan’s historic temples. A highlight of any visit to Akasawa for many railfans is the inspection of Baldwin 0-4-2 steam locomotive No 1 which is on static display in the railway workshops. During her working life from 1916 to 1960, Baldwin No 1 alone steamed almost half a million kilometers.

I’m guiding a series of small group, narrow gauge rail tours to Taiwan and Japan. Highlights of the Taiwan tour is a visit to the spectacular Alishan Forest Railway which climbs from sea level to 2.200m in just 75 kilometers and on special occasions, still operates three restored Lima Shay geared locomotives!

Imagine the amount of logs the little Baldwin hauled during its working life. Kiso hinoki is prized for its straight grain. You can buy working models of much of this equipment in HO scale, 1:87, and 30" in that scale is about 9mm, so the models run on N scale track.
False advertising dude, Supposed to see the train pulled by a STEAM locomotive not a diesel or gas locomotive.
